Inspired Organics Now Recalling All Lots of Almond, Peanut and Tahini Butters Due to Listeria

After an initial recall and an expanded recall (6 days later), Inspired Organics is now recalling all lots of their Almond, Peanut, and Tahini Butters when testing found that the Listeria contamination went beyond the product involved in the initial recalls.

The product was produced by Oskri Corporation, a Wisconsin establishment.  This company produces a line of their own butters, so it will be interesting to see whether this company will be recalling their own branded product  (unless there are some major processing differences or other reason why not, one would wonder why more products are not yet involved).

This week in Mislabeled Products for Week Ending 12/22/18

Eggs Missing on Label - A Pueblo, Colo. establishment is recalling approximately 956 pounds of ready-to-eat poultry products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens - the product contains eggs which is not declared on the product label.  The problem was discovered on Dec. 17, 2018 when the company notified FSIS inspection program personnel that the incorrect ingredient statement had been used for the final product.

Incorrect Packaging - A Richmond, CA establishment is recalling 14.6 ounce (414g) Greens and Grains Hummus and Quinoa Tabouleh Wrap, because it may contain undeclared soy,  The recall was initiated after it was discovered during an internal review of records that product containing soy was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of soy. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.

Impossible Burgers at the Retail Store?

Impossible Burgers has petitioned FDA to allow them to sell their plant-based burgers at retail.  The issue is the soy leghemoglobin (plant based hemoglobin produced by genetically engineered yeast) imparts a red color to the plant bases analogue product to give the appearance of meat.  So fake meat that looks like meat.  May not seem like a big deal, but if you can add an chemical to fake meat to make it red, can you add a chemical to real meat to make it more red....and that you cannot do.

I think a consumer issue will be proper handling - keeping cold, proper storage, etc

A little on Impossible Meat (they have a primer for foodservice operations that discusses how to handle and cook product)

Ingredients - Water, Textured Wheat Protein, Coconut Oil, Potato Protein, Natural Flavors, 2% or Less Of: Leghemoglobin (Soy), Yeast Extract, Salt, Konjac Gum, Xanthan Gum, Soy Protein Isolate,
Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Thiamin (Vitamin B1), Zinc, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2),
Vitamin B12. Contains: Soy, Wheat

Handling - best to handle cold and keep cold prior to cooking, and wear gloves.

Cooking - as a burger, cook as you would a hamburger, to medium or 160F

Produce Company Linked to E. coli Outbreak Issues Recall for Leaf Lettuce and Cauliflower, WA Sandwich Company Recalls Product

Adam Brothers, the only farm identified by FDA as one of the potential sources of the E.coli linked Romaine lettuce recall, issued a recall for leaf lettuce and cauliflower.  In a statement issued by the company, "The recall was initiated after it was discovered that sediment from a reservoir near where the produce was grown tested positive for E. coli O157:H7. Filtered and treated water from the
reservoir may have come in contact with the produce after it was harvested. None of the filtered,
treated water has tested positive for E. coli, all E. coli tests returning negative."

A Spokane WA sandwich company is recalling sandwiches made with green leaf lettuce grown by Adam Brothers.

While the leaf lettuce filets have not been tested to determine whether or not they have E. coli contamination, the fact that the E. coli was found in a sediment sample was sufficient enough evidence for the produce grower to issue a recall.  From the sandwich company's notice, "The affected products distributed by Spokane Produce include green leaf lettuce that was originated and recalled from Adam Bros. Farming Inc. of Santa Maria, CA."

California Company Recalls Salad Due to Listeria Positive Sample

Apio, Inc. of Guadalupe, California is recalling salad bowls after after informed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) that one random sample of salad bowl product with Best Before of Dec 14, 2018 tested positive for Listeria Monocytogenes. The are currently only recalling products produced on the same day and same production line as the one that tested positive by the CFIA.

Hopefully this company has faith in thier controls that the Listeria is limited to one lot, which would mean that the contamination is more an incidental, transient issue rather than an endemic, process-source contamination.  In the past, recalls start off small with companies assuming contamination was a one day event, only to expand as they discover the issue is much bigger.

Safety of Food At Sports Venues - ESPN Investigates

In an ESPN Outside the Lines report, an investigation is conducted into the safety of food served at major sporting venues.  They rank the venues based upon the number and type of violations identified in regulatory inspections.

The challenge for these operations is to feed a lot of people in a short period of time using temporary staff.  Along with this, adhering to food safety procedures and keeping facilities clean are a must.  And considering the price that patrons pay for the food, one would think these facilities would have the necessary controls in place.

Impact on Produce Industry of E. coli Outbreak in Romaine Lettuce

A good read in FoodDive on the impact of the E.coli outbreaks in romaine as related to the produce supply chain.  In the latest outbreak, FDA called for people to avoid Romaine lettuce and this caused a massive dump of product and a huge decrease in sales.
"But the outbreaks have pummeled romaine lettuce sales, according to data from Nielsen. Sales of the vegetable, typically the most widely consumed salad green, slumped 13% during the year ending Nov. 24 to $631 million, the analytics firm estimated. With less romaine lettuce available, USDA said prices of other lettuce varieties have surged, including Boston and iceberg lettuce — which saw a nearly 170% jump."
A warning for more to come?  Without good traceback, FDA will probably follow a similar tact with the next produce recall.  So will the industry be able to do voluntary labeling.  What about testing of irrigation water?
The Food Safety Modernization Act, signed into law in 2011, called for growers to test their irrigation water and take steps to prevent contaminated sources from being used on produce. But the FDA announced in September 2017 that implementation would be delayed until at least 2022, beginning with the largest farms, in order to allow the agency to “consider how we might further reduce the regulatory burden or increase flexibility.”
Water testing has its issues including setting acceptable standards that can reflect the presence of pathogens, being able to find incidental contamination, etc.  Product sampling provides no guarantee either that low level contaminants will be found.  Can there ever be a 100% guarantee in preventing pathogens in leafy greens...probably not.

Vermont Establishment Recalls Beef Quarters for SRM

A Vermont establishment is recalling approximately 10,828 pounds of raw intact bone-in beef quarters from cattle identified as being over 30 months of age because the products may contain specified risk materials (SRM), specifically vertebral column.  The problem was discovered when FSIS was notified by the state of Vermont of a complaint received by the state.  FSIS then investigated the complaint.

Specified risk materials (SRMs) are tissues in cattle that are considered to be of high risk for prion contamination. Prions are proteins that cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow, a disease that causes deterioration of the brain.  Establishments that slaughter cattle or process carcasses or parts of cattle must identify, remove, and segregate SRMs from edible meat, and dispose of those parts.

From USDA procedures for SRM Control, "SRMs are found in cattle of all ages. The age of cattle determines which SRMs require segregation, removal and disposal. Tonsils and the distal ileum of the small intestine are SRMs from cattle of any age. Several tissues are SRMs only in cattle 30 months of age and older (OTM+). For cattle 30 months of age or older, additional SRMs are the skull, brain, trigeminal ganglia (nerves attached to the brain), eyes, spinal cord, vertebral column (excluding the vertebrae of the tail, the transverse processes of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, and the wings of the sacrum), and dorsal root ganglia (nerves attached to the spinal cord)."

FDA Updates E.coli Outbreak Linked to Romaine Lettuce, At Least One Farm Identified

Updating the ongoing investigation into the E.coli O157:H7 contamination in romaine lettuce, FDA announced that one farm so far has been linked so far as a source of product.  FDA "identified a positive sample result for the outbreak strain in the sediment of a local irrigation reservoir used by a single farm owned and operated by Adam Bros. Farms in Santa Barbara County."    With that, they are leaving the romaine warning in place for "Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Barbara Counties".  While the E.coli organism found in the sediement matched the outbreak strain via Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), the traceback analysis indicates that more than this one farm are probably involved.

They went on to state, "It’s important to note that although this is an important piece of information, the finding on this farm doesn’t explain all illnesses and our traceback investigation will continue as we narrow down what commonalities this farm may have with other farms that are part of our investigation. While the analysis of the strain found in the people who got ill and the sediment in one of this farm’s water sources is a genetic match, our traceback work suggests that additional romaine lettuce shipped from other farms could also likely be implicated in the outbreak. Therefore, the water from the reservoir on this single farm doesn’t fully explain what the common source of the contamination."

"As of Dec. 13, our investigation yielded records from five restaurants in four different states that have identified 11 different distributors, nine different growers, and eight different farms as potential sources of contaminated romaine lettuce. Currently, no single establishment is in common across the investigated supply chains. This indicates that although we have identified a positive sample from one farm to date, the outbreak may not be explained by a single farm, grower, harvester, or distributor."

Also as of the December 13th report, there have been 59 people infected in 15 states, with the last reported illness onset date being Nov. 16.

The farm with the positive E.coli sample in the sediment, Adams Brothers, has been cooperating.   They are a fifth generation farm.

MI RTE Food Establish Closes After Unwilling to Comply with FDA to Fix Compliance Issues

A Michigan processor of RTE foods decided to shut down completely after it was unwilling to fix the issues identified in federal inspections.  The company had received a Warning Letter in 2016 when FDA inspectors found Listeria in the facility along with a number of issues that would potentially spread that listeria to food.  After further inspection, FDA was moving to block operations until the issues were resolved.

"The company, under its legal filing, agreed to a consent decree under which it cannot again operate at its facility until it develops a listeria monitoring program, creates a food safety employee training program, and meets other training and safety requirements."  The company responded that they "have always placed great importance on producing high-quality food and on food safety. We are well aware of the Complaint and Consent Decree that was recently filed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We agreed to enter the Consent Decree to resolve outstanding compliance issues raised by the FDA rather than in response to any known health concerns."

FDA Now Advises to Avoid Romaine Lettuce from Northern and Central CA

Updated 11/27/18
FDA updated its recommendation on Romaine lettuce - "If romaine lettuce does have this labeling information, we advise avoiding any product from the Central Coast growing regions of northern and central California. Romaine lettuce from outside those regions need not be avoided.  Romaine lettuce that was harvested outside of the Central Coast growing regions of northern and central California does not appear to be related to the current outbreak. Hydroponically- and greenhouse-grown romaine also does not appear to be related to the current outbreak. There is no recommendation for consumers or retailers to avoid using romaine harvested from these sources."

Of course, it is important to make sure that packages of Romaine indicate harvest information, including the date and location.  The industry has agreed to voluntary labeling to ensure compliance.

There are now 43 cases with 16 hospitalizations across 12 states.

CDC MMWR Report - 2017 Norovirus Outbreak During Thanksgiving Holidays

CDC released a report on a 2017 norovirus outbreak associated with a vomiting event in a restaurant.  Thirty-six cases were identified  with individuals suffering from diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps occurring 2.5 to 54 hours after visiting the restaurant.  Symptoms lasted about 3 days.  Those most likely to become ill were in the restaurant close to the time of the vomiting event.

Basically, an ill patron vomits in the restaurant.  Although an employee applied spray disinfectant, 36 patrons still contracted the virus.  "A point-source norovirus outbreak occurred after an infected patron vomited in a restaurant. Transmission near the vomiting event likely occurred by aerosol or fomite. Norovirus spread throughout the restaurant could have occurred by aerosol, person-to-person, fomite, or foodborne routes. Inadequate employee handwashing likely facilitated foodborne transmission through servings of pecan pie."  Norovirus is highly infectious and transmits easily in the environment.

So if you are in an eating establishment and someone vomits, consider leaving immediately.  For the food establishment, move people away from event, clean like heck following established protocol, and consider giving the cleaner the rest of the night off.

CDC Advises To Avoid ALL Romaine Lettuce After E.coli Cases Reported

UPDATE ISSUED - 11/26/18 GO TO LINK

CDC is advising that people not eat romaine lettuce after an outbreak of E. coli has been identified.  There have been thirty-two people infected with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 have been reported from 11 states with thirteen people hospitalized, including one person who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported. The illnesses are listed with dates ranging from October 8, 2018 to October 31, 2018.

The reason for warning against all romaine lettuce is that the source is not known yet.  Until more information is gathered, CDC is taking a precautionary stance.

While this strain is linked to past outbreaks, it is not linked to the recent E.coli outbreak in Yuma AZ, but it is linked to the 2017 E. coli outbreak.    "Whole genome sequencing (WGS) results showed that the E. coli O157:H7 strain isolated from ill people in this outbreak is closely related genetically to the E. coli strain isolated from ill people in a 2017 outbreak linked to leafy greens in the United States and to romaine lettuce in Canada. The current outbreak is not related to a recent multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to romaine lettuce. People in the spring outbreak were infected with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria with a different DNA fingerprint."

In the 2017 outbreak of the same strain, the source was not definitively found, although it was said to be leafy greens. In that outbreak, CDC and FDA were criticized for not stating it was Romaine lettuce.

Stew Source of C. perfringens Outbreak at NC Church BBQ

Hundreds of attendees of a church BBQ in North Carolina were stricken with C. perfringens.  Tests indicate that it was the Brunswick stew.  This would indicate that the stew was not held at proper temperatures between the time it was made and the time it was served, allowing the C. perfringens to grow to high number.  Symptoms, including watery diarrhea and mild abdominal cramps occur about 16 hours after consumption of foods containing large numbers (>106 live vegetative cells or >106 spores) of enterotoxin-producing C. perfringens and will last 12 to 24 hours.

Michigan Company Recalls Ackawi Cheese After State Inspection Discovers Listeria Issue

Green Cedar Dairy of Michigan is recalling Ackawi cheese after a Listeria issue was discovered on November 9, 2018 during a routine inspection by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, Food & Dairy Division (MDARD) and by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

From www.cheese.com, Ackawi cheese is "a Middle Eastern cheese named after the Aker region of Palestine, where it first originated. In Arabic, akkawi means "from akka". It is soft unripened brine cheese with a chewy, smooth consistency and a very mild, slightly salty flavour. The cheese is widely popular across most of the Levant where it is used as a table cheese, eaten as it or paired with a fruit."

Further, "The cheese is commonly made using pasteurized cow's milk, but can be made with goat or sheep's milk as well. It is produced on a large scale in Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Cyprus where people typically eat it with a soft flatbread at lunch and dinner. Its texture can be compared to that of a Mozzarella, Feta or a Mizithra, as it does not melt down very well. The resistance to melting makes it an excellent frying cheese, because it holds its shape very well. The cheese can be stored for up to a year."

Recall Issued After Supplier Ships Frozen Asparagus with Listeria Issue

The Pictsweet Company has recalled 1,872 cases of Pictsweet Farms 8-ounce Steam’ables Asparagus Spears after it was notified by the manufacturer that product suspected of containing Listeria monocytogenes was inadvertently shipped to The Pictsweet Company.

It is hard to know exactly how this happened.  Perhaps a test-and-hold program that didn't hold too well?  Or a sample was taken for testing and that lot of product was not held?  The next question is whether this supplier has a larger Listeria issue extending beyond this lot.

Raw Ground Turkey Recalled After Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

Jennie-O Turkey, a Barron, Wis. establishment, is recalling approximately 91,388 pounds of raw ground turkey products after being linked to a Salmonella outbreak with 164 cases in 35 different states.   According to the USDA report, "The patient tested positive for Salmonella Reading and the sample from the ground turkey matches the outbreak strain."

The good news is that the recall does not involve whole turkeys at this point, so it should not impact Thanksgiving turkey purchases.  However, the investigation is ongoing and it seems that some people who became ill handled live turkeys.  So it is important to use proper procedures for handling and preparing whole turkey products, especially during our Thanksgiving holiday.  From the USDA report, "Patients have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different stores, handling raw turkey pet food and/or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys or living with someone who handled live turkeys."

CDC Investigating Ongoing Salmonella Outbreak Associated with Raw Turkey.....Just in Time for Thanksgiving

CDC is investigating an ongoing Salmonella outbreak involving raw turkey.  There have been 135 cases in 35 different states with 63 hospitalizations and one death.  CDC has not been able to pinpoint an exact source except that it is related to raw turkey.  The strain, Salmonella Reading, is sufficiently virulent to be causing this ongoing and serious issue.

So with Thanksgiving upon us, it is especially important this year to follow proper practices.
  • Wash your hands after touching raw turkey or drippings.
  • Wash all surfaces after contacting raw turkey or drippings (cutting boards, refrigerator shelves, knives, etc)
  • Cook your turkey to the right temperature.  Use a thermometer to verify at least 165F.  But this year, go a few degrees more than you normally do just to be safe.
A few other important things.....
  • Don't wash your turkey in the sink spraying that turkey stuff all over.
  • Cook the stuffing separate from the bird.  Sure, you may like it better, but it ain't worth sitting on the pot for a week.
  • Don't eat raw or undercooked turkey.  If your Aunt Mabel serves it undercooked, it is time to set her straight.
  • Don't feed your dog raw turkey dog food.

FDA Releases Report on Sources of Foodborne Illnesses on Four Primary Pathogens

The IFSAC, a federal interagency group focused on food safety released a report on sources of foodborne illness from four pathogens - Salmonella, E. Coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Campylobcacter.  The report year was 2016.

The full report titled "Foodborne illness source attribution estimates for 1998 to 2016 for Salmonella,
Escherichia coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, and Campylobacter using multi-year outbreak surveillance data, United States" can be found HERE.

From that report, here are the key takeaways.  There is nothing surprising.

"Salmonella illnesses came from a wide variety of foods.
Salmonella illnesses were broadly attributed across multiple food categories. More than 75% of Salmonella illnesses were attributed to seven food categories: Seeded Vegetables (such as tomatoes), Chicken, Pork, Fruits, Other Produce (such as nuts), Eggs, and Beef."
[Salmonella is carried by so many animals and with that, comes in on raw ingredients such as meats, grains, produce, etc.  Also can survive in the processing environment for long periods of time.  Simple errors such as under-cooking, cross contamination, inadequate sanitation provides opportunity for this organism to contaminate food.]

"E.coli O157 illnesses were most often linked to Vegetable Row Crops (such as leafy greens) and Beef.
Nearly 75% of illnesses were linked to these two categories."
[This organism is associated with animal (ruminants) poop.  It gets to people either via beef, primarily ground beef, and then people don't properly cook (no thermometer) or the organism gets onto produce via contaminated water or when ruminants poop around the produce]

"Listeria monocytogenes illnesses were most often linked to Dairy products and Fruits.
More than 75% of illnesses were attributed to these two categories, but the rarity of Listeria monocytogenes outbreaks makes these estimates less reliable than those for other pathogens."
[This contamination is primarily a processing environmental contaminate.  In facilities where equipment sanitation is not as good as it should be, the organism establishes itself and then the food.  The meat industry has it pretty much figured out...there are no silver bullets, just solid procedures and constant vigilance]

"Non-Dairy Campylobacter illnesses were most often linked to Chicken.
Over 80% of non-Dairy foodborne illnesses were attributed to Chicken, Other Seafood (such as shellfish), Turkey, Other Meat/Poultry (such as lamb or duck), and Vegetable Row Crops, with Campylobacter illnesses most often linked to Chicken. An attribution percentage for Dairy is not included because, among other reasons, most foodborne Campylobacter outbreaks were associated with unpasteurized milk, which is not widely consumed, and we think these over-represent Dairy as a source of illness caused by Campylobacter. Removing Dairy illnesses from the calculations highlights important sources of illness from widely consumed foods, such as Chicken."
[The food with the highest incidence rate is raw milk, but since most people don't consume raw milk, the number is not as high as it would be if we all started to drink it.  Outside of that, it is poultry.  With Thanksgiving coming up, that is something to keep in mind.]

Mislabeled Burrito - NuVue Foods, a Hamtramck, Mich. establishment, is recalling approximately 268 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken burrito products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, -the products contain egg which was not declared on the product label.  The problem was discovered on November 9, 2018 after the firm received a consumer complaint. The establishment produced “18th Street Deli Farmers Burritos,” containing eggs, which were mistakenly labeled as “18th Street Deli Chicken Burrito”.

FDA Sampling Finds Milk in Chocolate - Recchiuti Confections (San Francisco, CA) discovered two batches of their Bittersweet Chocolate Bar and two batches of their Feve Chocolate Bar contain high levels of milk protein after FDA sampling.

Supplied Ingredient Has Allergen Not on Labeled - Wegmans has initiated a voluntary recall of the pumpkin loaf and coffee cake because they may contain milk not declared on the label.  The recall was initiated when it was learned that one of the ingredients (a streusel topping supplied by Bake'n Joy Foods of Andover, MA) contained milk that had not been declared on the finished product label.

Summary of FDA's Report on Risk Factors in Food Service Establishments

FDA compiled analysis of inspection reports of different foodservice establishments over 2013/2014 as part of a 10 year study.    The whole report can be found here, but we have summarized the most important findings:

  • Most establishments had 3 or more food safety issues.
  • It helps to have a Certified Food Safety Manager onsite.  Many jurisdictions do not require it.
  • It is beneficial to have an established food safety management system.  Most have no system to a rudimentary system.
  • While people generally cook food correctly and handle raw meats properly, handwashing and keeping TCS foods out of the temperature danger zone are the biggest issues.

NY Artisan Cheese Processor Recalls Product Tests Positive for Listeria

Sprout Creek Farm of Poughkeepsie, New York is recalling 132 wheels of their "Margie" cheese, a soft, white rind, cow's milk cheese, because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  The product is being recalled after an FDA inspection found Listeria monocytogenes in products that they sampled.

A few items of concern...if this product was tested and found to be positive, other products may be implicated.  Also, it is likely that FDA will see if the organism found here matches any cases of illness.

Duncan Hines Cake Mix Recalled after Outbreak Strain Found in Product

Conagra Brands is recalling Duncan Hines cake mixes after being connected "with a positive finding of Salmonella in a retail sample of Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix that may be linked to a Salmonella outbreak", where five people have become infected.  The Salmonella strain, Salmonella Agbeni, matched the organism collected from ill persons as determined through the use of Whole Genome Sequencing.  "While it has not been definitively concluded that this product is linked to the outbreak and the investigation is still ongoing."

The baking process, if properly followed, will eliminate the organism,  However, people do eat raw batter and there is the issue of cross contamination that can occur in the kitchen when the powder mix gets onto food contact surfaces as well as other food.

Has this been an issue in the past?  Salmonella as well as STEC E. coli have been involved in flour related outbreaks and recalls (1, 2, 3 45 ).  Improved techniques for tracking outbreaks and for identifying specific organisms using Whole Genome Sequencing have given a truer look at sources that may not have identified in the past.

FDA Issues Report on E. coli O157:H7 Outbreak associated with Romaine Lettuce from the Yuma AZ Area

FDA issued a report on the E.coli outbreak associated with romaine lettuce from the Yuma AZ area that was first identified in April of 2018.  This was the largest number of E. coli O157:H7 infections in the United States in the last decade with 210 reported illnesses from 36 states, resulting in 96 hospitalizations, 27 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and five deaths.

The investigation found that there were no obvious deficiencies in the processing facility, but did have these findings for the growing area.
  • The outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 was found in water from three locations along a 3.5 mile stretch in an irrigation canal near Wellton in Yuma County, Arizona.
  • The outbreak strain was not found anywhere else in sampling done during the EA in the Yuma growing region of Imperial County, California, and Yuma County, Arizona, although other human pathogens were identified in collected samples.
  • FDA has concluded that the water from the irrigation canal where the outbreak strain was found most likely led to contamination of the romaine lettuce consumed during this outbreak.
  • FDA cannot rule out that other sources or means of romaine lettuce contamination with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 may have occurred.
  • There are several ways that irrigation canal water may have come in contact with the implicated romaine lettuce including direct application to the crop and/or use of irrigation canal water to dilute crop protection chemicals applied to the lettuce crop, either through aerial or ground-based spray applications.
  • How and when the irrigation canal became contaminated with the outbreak strain is unknown. A large animal feeding operation is nearby but no obvious route for contamination from this facility to the irrigation canal was identified. Other explanations are possible although the EA team found no evidence to support them.

With this, FDA makes recommendations (below) for helping to prevent these issues including putting measures in place to assure the safety of the irrigation water and to assess the risk of land use surrounding the water source.

The full investigative report can be found here.  LINK
It includes maps with sampling sites as well as test results.  Worth the read if interest in the topic.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Many vendors at farmers markets take inadequate precautions to prevent the spread of foodborne illness, and they should be trained to reduce food-safety risks, according to Penn State researchers who completed the final phase of an innovative five-year study.

Using a comprehensive three-way approach, the research assessed food safety behaviors at Pennsylvania farmers markets using direct concealed observations, state sanitarian observations, and self-reported vendor surveys. The results revealed key distinctions between observed vendor food-handling practices — by both researchers and state sanitarians — and vendor self-reported practices.

Frozen Vegetable Recall Due to Inadequate Followup on Presumptive Positive Pathogen Results

The FDA Enforcement Report gives an indication for the cause of the frozen produce recall associated with McCain's Foods.  In FDA's October 31st release of Enforcement Reports, FDA has posted the McCain Foods recalled products, over 50 different items, recalled and the reason.
"During an internal audit at the manufacturing location, it was discovered that finished product had been released on numerous occasions after receiving presumptive positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella; confirmation was not conducted".
Basically, product testing was done and when a presumptive positive was found, there was no followup.  There was no corrective action for the product.  They never determined if it was positive or negative for the pathogen.  Because of this, they recalled the product.

Presumptive positives can be common depending upon the test and food matrix.  In many cases, depending upon the cleanliness of the facility and how well they follow their procedures for processing and control of the post-roasting environment, these would have come out negative.  But we don't know.

Because of the pacakage sizes, this product is packed for food processing and food service sectors.  These are not consumer size packs, and thus the reason we had not seen in FDA Recalls Notices.

Product list includes:

Controversy on Herbicide Round-up Found in Food

A report was issued by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that documents traces of the herbicide Roundup in oat cereals such as Cheerios.  While the "levels, though, were far below the concentrations deemed unsafe by state and federal regulators", EWG believes the EPA established levels are too high and the amounts found can impact health, especially for children.

"But the question of how much of the herbicide in kids' food is too much — and whether it's a carcinogen at all — has become hotly debated among scientists and regulators around the world, with no clear answer."  Controversy is good.  It forces us to question and reevaluate.

Lawsuit Filed Against Airline for Mishandling Listeria Issue

Former employees have filed a lawsuit against United Airlines after the airline disregarded their complaints about Listeria contamination in the airport commissary.

While it is difficult to comment on the validity of the lawsuit, one takeaway from this can be how non-food companies who handle food address food safety issues.  Companies whose sole focus is processing / handling / distributing food, tend to have decision-making executives with industry experience, thus are in tune with the regulations.  Does the same go for entities like airlines where the main focus of the business is something other than food?  It is important for companies or organizations who serve food as some part of their business to recognize the impact of food safety issues and the need to understand and follow regulations and food industry best practices.

Microplastic in Your Poop - Is this Something New to Worry About?

A recent study found that human stool samples collected from 8 volunteers all contained microplastic.  Microplastics, from 50 micrometers to 500 micrometers in size, are generated through our use and discarding of plastic.  They are "created unintentionally by shredding, abrasion or decomposition of larger plastic parts in the environment".

We have known that microplastics are widespread in the environment including the oceans.  It has been shown to be a wide variety of animals including worms and mammals.  The impact on health is not fully understood, "there are initial indications that microplastics can damage the gastrointestinal tract by promoting inflammatory reactions or absorbing harmful substances, further studies are needed to assess the potential dangers of microplastics for humans".

Two Recalls of Curry Issued Due to High Lead Levels

Two recalls were issued for curry spice due to high levels of lead.  The first recall was issued due to a consumer complaint.   "The product sampling was conducted as a result of a consumer complaint regarding elevated blood lead levels in a child."  Yikes

In this recall,  Sirob Imports, Inc of Lindenhurst, NY recalled curry under the brands Corrado, Orlando Imports, Nouri’s Syrian Bakery, Mediterranean Specialty Foods Brand and Butera Fruit Market Curry Powder.  The recall was initiated after FDA sampling found elevated levels of lead in the product. The product sampling was conducted as a result of a consumer complaint regarding elevated blood lead levels in a child.

In the second recall,  "UBC Food Distributors Inc, due to a high level of lead after testing was done by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development.  This product was purchased from an importer.  The importer, along with the FDA, are now in the process of contacting the source of the product, so that corrective action can be taken on their part.  Use of, or consumption of this product may elevate lead levels in the blood."

Canada - Breaded Chicken Burgers Recalled After Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In Canada, Sofina Foods is recalling breaded chicken burgers after the product was linked to 25 cases of Salmonella infection.  There were two hospitalizations.  This is a uncooked product, stated clearly on the label, and has cooking instructions on the back (cook to 165F / 74C).

According to the Canadian Public Health Release (below), there have been 14 outbreaks associated with raw chicken, including frozen raw breaded chicken products with 474 cases and 90 hospitalizations.

It would be interesting to know to what degree do people verify cooking temperature or cross contamination.  A good guess would be under-cooking, especially an issue when starting with frozen product.

Organic Chicken Products Recalled Due to Low Levels of Thallium

Suzanna’s Kitchen, Inc., a Peachtree Corners, Ga. establishment, is recalling approximately 15,363 pounds of grilled chicken products due to an unapproved substance -the product contains concentrations of thallium.   "The problem was discovered when the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services tested retail packages of Nature Raised Farms Organic Gluten Free Grilled Chicken Strips produced by Suzanna’s Kitchen, Inc. and found concentrations of thallium in the product. The concentration levels do not present an immediate health hazard; however, FSIS is recommending this Class II recall out of an abundance of caution because prolonged ingestion of contaminated product in sensitive populations could cause some health effects. FSIS is working with the involved parties to identify the source of the contamination and prevent any further product from going into commerce."

From Wikipdia, "Commercially, thallium is produced not from potassium ores, but as a byproduct from refining of heavy-metal sulfide ores.  Soluble thallium salts (many of which are nearly tasteless) are toxic, and they were historically used in rat poisons and insecticides. Use of these compounds has been restricted or banned in many countries, because of their nonselective toxicity. Thallium poisoning usually results in hair loss, although this characteristic symptom does not always surface. Because of its historic popularity as a murder weapon, thallium has gained notoriety as "the poisoner's poison" and "inheritance powder" (alongside arsenic)."

CDC Updates Case Counts of Salmonella Infections Associated with Raw Ground Beef From AZ Processor

CDC updated information on a Salmonella outbreak associated with ground meat produced by a Arizona processor, JBS Tolleson, Inc. The company had issued a recall earlier this month. There are now 120 reported cases of salmonellosis in 22 different states, primarily in the western part of the country. Thirty-three of those cases have resulted in hospitalizations.

Although this is a raw product, it shows the difficulty when a product like ground meat has a level of pathogens that increase the risk during handling or insufficient cooking (you know who you are non-thermometer users).  Manufacturers must do their part to provide sufficient reduction of pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli.

Frozen Vegetables from Canadian-based Frozen Food Company Responsible for Multiple Recalls in US

Numerous US companies have issued recalls after using frozen vegetables recalled by the supplier, McCain Foods, a Canadian based company at their California facility.  The products are being recalled for Listeria and Salmonella.    According to one news report, "As McCain Foods explained in a Friday e-mail to The Miami Herald, the company “recently identified a potential health risk related to its fire roasted, caramelized or sautéed frozen vegetable and fruit products produced at its Colton facility, California. As a result, we have made the decision to voluntarily recall all products produced at this facility."

  • Product recalled include both RTE products and products that have cooking instructions.
  • Recalled product includes various store brands produced by further processing companies including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Marketside.
  • The statement does not indicate how the potential contamination issue was there.  One would guess testing because the statement indicates, 'out of an abundance of caution.
  • Another indication the recall was found by testing is that it was for both Listeria and Salmonella...so this may indicate that a screening test was done
  • There have been no illnesses to date.
