Sandwich Company Expands Recall Again

Lipari Foods is yet again expanding its recall of Premo and Fresh Grab sandwiches due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.  The issue started when their supplier notified them. The initial recall was on January 6, 2020 and second on January 13, 2020 .

This is a typical type of a scenario where a company finds that they never had Listeria under control.  They may have not had a sufficiently robust program to find it....doing testing, but not really looking for it.  Hard to say for sure what occurred, but further expansion of a recall is never what you want to see.

Deli Sandwiches Recalled After Environmental Sample Positive for Listeria

Lipari Foods has issued a voluntary recall of various Premo and Fresh Grab wedge sandwiches due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. This was brought to our attention by JLM Manufacturing after environmental sampling returned a positive test result for Listeria monocytogenes.

The product looks to have at least 3 weeks shelf-life, plenty of time for Listeria to grow at refrigeration temperatures.

White Castle Recalls Retail Pack of Hamburger Sliders After Listeria Positive Test

White Castle is recalling their retail hamburger sandwich product / sliders after a third party laboratory tested and found Listeria on finished product.

This is a fully cooked product with heat and serve instructions.

According to the recall announcement, the company "is taking the following actions at the facility where the problem was identified:
•Intensive sanitation and cleaning with guidance from outside food safety experts.
•Aggressively elevating already strong food safety testing and manufacturing guidelines.
•Conducting comprehensive testing to confirm no presence of listeria in the facility. “This voluntary recall is precautionary and is the right thing to do,” said Richardson."

Note that the product is under FDA jurisdiction vs USDA.  This is a closed sandwich which falls under FDA jurisdiction.  (USDA regulations are limited to open faced sandwiches  - "Must contain at least 50 percent cooked meat. Sandwiches are amendable (USDA inspected) only if they are open faced sandwiches."

Sandwich Companies Recall Premade Chicken Salad Sandwiches After Supplier of Cooked Chicken Finds Listeria Issue

A number of  companies that make and markets sandwiches are recalling their chicken salad sandwiches due to a Listeria contaminated ingredient.  Northern Tier Bakery of Saint Paul Park, Minnesota, Mrs. Stranttons's,  E.A. Sween,  Coborn's, Inc , Lipari Foods, and Grand Strand Sandwich  are voluntarily recalling chicken salad sandwiches after the cooked chicken supplier, Tip Top Poultry, Inc., a Rockmart, GA, establishment, informed these companies of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

"The problem was discovered when the firm notified FSIS that multiple samples of product produced by Tip Top Poultry, Inc. confirmed positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes after being tested in Canada. The firm decided to recall all cooked, diced or shredded, RTE chicken products produced from January 21, 2019 through September 24, 2019 with product codes ranging from 10000 to 19999 and 70000 to 79999. Tip Top expanded the dates and the scope of the recall out of an abundance of caution."

Produce Company Linked to E. coli Outbreak Issues Recall for Leaf Lettuce and Cauliflower, WA Sandwich Company Recalls Product

Adam Brothers, the only farm identified by FDA as one of the potential sources of the E.coli linked Romaine lettuce recall, issued a recall for leaf lettuce and cauliflower.  In a statement issued by the company, "The recall was initiated after it was discovered that sediment from a reservoir near where the produce was grown tested positive for E. coli O157:H7. Filtered and treated water from the
reservoir may have come in contact with the produce after it was harvested. None of the filtered,
treated water has tested positive for E. coli, all E. coli tests returning negative."

A Spokane WA sandwich company is recalling sandwiches made with green leaf lettuce grown by Adam Brothers.

While the leaf lettuce filets have not been tested to determine whether or not they have E. coli contamination, the fact that the E. coli was found in a sediment sample was sufficient enough evidence for the produce grower to issue a recall.  From the sandwich company's notice, "The affected products distributed by Spokane Produce include green leaf lettuce that was originated and recalled from Adam Bros. Farming Inc. of Santa Maria, CA."

Establishments Recall Sliced Meat Products and Sandwiches Associated with Recalled Hams for Listeria

A Richmond, Va. establishment, is recalling approximately 18,296 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry deli-sliced products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes.  The recall was initiated after the firm received recall notification from the NY establishment, Johnston County Hams that issued a recall of hams due to Listeria, and recognized it had processed meat products associated with that Listeria recall.
Other companies issuing recalls after using Johnston County Hams:
- Callie's Charleston Biscuits, LLC is issuing a voluntary product recall for two products, its Callie's Charleston Country Ham Biscuits and its Cocktail Ham Biscuits, that may contain the potentially affected Johnston County Hams.
- Ladyfingers Caterers is voluntarily recalling its Signature Shaved Country Ham Rolls as a result of the Johnston County Hams recall.

Sandwiches Recalled After Company's Testing Program Detects Listeria

Lipari Foods, based in Michigan, is recalling pre-made sandwiches due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria.  The testing was done by the company's fresh food manufacturing company, JLM Manufacturing, which was where the product was packed.  Product was packed underd the Premo and Fresh Grab labels.  Product was packed on the 17th of July and has an expiration date of August 8 (3 weeks..eww).

There have been no reported illnesses.

Currently, there is just one product day recalled.  So it will be interesting to see whether this follows the normal path these Listeria-related recalls go...that is, the recall is expanded because regulators find that there was inadequate control and more than one day's production may be implicated.

School Lunch Provider Recalling Sandwich Items After Positive Listeria Environmental Samples

A California foodservice provider, one that specializes in providing school lunches, is recalling sandwich products after FDA  environmental sampling found Listeria monocytogenes on multiple food contact surfaces,  The products were distributed nationwide but it is unlikely that any of the school districts still have product.

A few things that are icky about this:
1) A place making packaged sandwiches for kids in LA and shipping them nationally.  You would think that someone locally could make sandwiches.  They would probably be fresher.  I wonder what kind of shelf-life they have on this product.
2) A facility making sandwiches for kids does not have a solid food safety program.  Perhaps better stated....they had a bad food safety program because FDA found multiple LM positive food contact surfaces.  Seriously, that is nasty.
3) It is unlikely that these products would be reheated sufficiently, if at all, to destroy the pathogen.

Starbucks Supplier Recalls Pre-Packaged Breakfast Sandwiches After Listeria Positive Food Contact Surface

A supplier for Starbucks is recalling pre-packaged breakfast sandwiches after that supplier had  positive sample result on a food contact surface.  While product did not test positive, a positive contact surface indicates the possibility that product could have been cross contaminated.

In assessing the risk, there are a few things to note.  For one, the sandwich is shipped and stored frozen.  While this will prevent growth during shipment,  if the product is thawed and held for a period of days before use, there can be time for the organism to grow.  As the number of organisms increases, this not only increases the chances of organisms surviving a heat treatment, but it also increases the risk of cross-contamination to other foods and food contact surfaces within the store environment as that product is handled.

These sandwich products would be heated by the store before serving, potentially lowering the chance of contamination.  However, with heat-and-serve product,  the heating process may not be controlled well enough or be hot enough to ensure complete destruction of the organism.

The next question will be on how good the facility's Listeria Control Program is.  If the program is good and this happens to be an outlier, than this recall may be it.  But if FDA finds little testing results to indicate a solid program, or they find a series of positive results with insufficient corrective action, they believe there is a higher risk and then push for additional recalls.

NC Company Recalls Vending-Machine Packaged Sandwiches Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

A North Carolina company that produces packaged sandwiches for vending type operations is recalling a wide variety of sandwiches after NC State found sample(s) to be positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Ready-to-eat sandwiches like this normally have a short shelf life, and have not been subject to recalls, although these types of items can certainly be a vehicle.  Sanitation control in the processing environment is critical for controlling in order to prevent contamination, especially equipment like meat slicers, ingredient refrigerated storage, and cutting boards.

UPDATE 10/23/2014

The company decided to shut down the facility, laying off 84 employees.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 12, 2014 - SunBurst Foods, Goldsboro NC is voluntarily recalling all of its SunBurst, Fresh Bites and Private labeled products which are currently in the market because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
