An AZ retailer is recalling its branded frozen cut spinach after random sampling revealed that finished products contained Listeria monocytogenes. The product was manufactured by National Frozen Foods of Oregon. One date code for both organic and conventional spinach was recalled. Product was shipped to 19 states (AZ, CA, NV, UT, NM, CO, TX, KS, OK, MO, TN, AL, GA, FL, SC, NC, PA, MD, and VA)
As we have seen with so many of these recalls in the past, one may expect additional lots recalled if the company finds that additional product lots have contamination, thus indicating inadequate controls were in place.
While freezing restricts growth and proper cooking would eliminate the Listeria risk, the concern would be the use of spinach in applications where heating is limited or product is not heated at all (smoothies, spinach dip) or where there is the chance of cross contamination in the kitchen.
This is not National Frozen Foods first Listeria related recall. In 2016, this company had the extensive recall with frozen peas and in 2018, there was a recall of frozen green beans.

Fresh Bagged Spinach Recalled for Listeria Contamination
A KY company is recalling bags of fresh spinach after being notified by their supplier partner that the spinach may have Listeria contamination. According to the report, "The products were distributed in North Carolina, Illinois, Kentucky and West Virginia and distributed through retail stores, wholesale and foodservice distributors."

Spinach Recalled After Low Levels of Cadmium Detected
A California produce company is recalling spinach for Cadmium contamination after trace levels were found through testing.
Cadmium is naturally found in soil, but in low levels. Higher concentrations can be found when associated with different types of industrial practices. No maximum tolerance levels have been set and minimal concentrations are not likely to have any immediate impact, and even these levels would be unlikely to have long term impacts.

Listeria Contamination in Bulk Organic Frozen Spinach Results in a Number of Recalls
A number of spinach products are being recalled due to the fact that bulk frozen spinach supplied by Coastal Green Vegetable Company LLC of Oxnard, CA, was found to have Listeria contamination. This bulk spinach was repacked by Twin City Foods into smaller bags for grocery stores as well as by Superior Foods that packed for Target. Recalls were also made by Amy's Kitcehn Carmel Food Group, and La Terra Fina for products made using the suspect spinach as an ingredient.
Spinach is blanched before freezing. Blanching, if done correctly, would eliminate the Listeria. The issue is with post-blanching contamination. Listeria is a known environmental bacterial pathogen that can become established in processing facilities. If not controlled, it can contaminate the spinach after blanching in the freezing and packing steps.
While cooking by the consumer would eliminate the pathogen, spinach is often used in dips and other products such as spinach smoothies where there may be little or no heating. There is an increasing trend of using spinach in these RTE applications. This poses a problem for those facilities that are built for RTE level of processing.
There have been no reported illnesses.

Walnuts falling from tree result in spinach recall
A limited amount of spinach is being recalled due to the potential to be contaminated by an allergen, walnuts. What is interesting in this is how the walnuts were found to have contaminated the product - they fell from the trees into spinach trucks/bins as the trucks/bins moved the spinach from the field to the processing facility.

There are two produce related recalls.
- Wegman’s is recalling it Organic Spinach and Spring Mix Blend after it was linked to now 19 cases of E. coli O157:H7 cases in New York. The product was co-packed for Wegman’s by Massachusetts based Spring Garden. The product was sold between Oct 14th and Nov 1st.
- Bolthouse Foods of Bakersfield CA is recalling carrot chips. A sample of the carrot chips were tested by NC Health and found to be positive for Salmonella. There have been no reported illnesses. Product was co-packed for store brands including Safeway Farms and Supervalu’s Farm Stand.

Bags of Organic Baby Spinach Recalled due to Salmonella Positive Test
Bags of organic baby spinach produced in California are being recalled due to a positive test result for Salmonella. The test was conducted by US Department of Ag. There are no known illnesses at this point. Product was packed under tow different brands and those shipped to over 20 states.
Interesting, the packer of the spinach, Taylor Farms, was the pioneer of Smartwash.

Taylor Farms Retail Inc. is voluntarily recalling organic baby spinach after a random sample tested positive for salmonella by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The product appeared in 5-ounce clamshells under the Private Selection label and 10-ounce clamshells with the Marketside label. Best-by dates are May 25, according to a news release.
No illnesses have been reported. The recalled items shipped from Salinas, Calif.-based Taylor Farms Retail Inc., on May 9 and May 10, according to the release.
The brands are private labels: Wal-Mart has Marketside and Kroger Co. has Private Selection.
The Private Selection product was distributed in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The UPC numbers are 0-11110-91128-5; package codes are TFRS 130B 1503 KT34 and TFRS 130B 1803 KT34.

Taylor Farms Retail Inc. is voluntarily recalling organic baby spinach after a random sample tested positive for salmonella by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The product appeared in 5-ounce clamshells under the Private Selection label and 10-ounce clamshells with the Marketside label. Best-by dates are May 25, according to a news release.
No illnesses have been reported. The recalled items shipped from Salinas, Calif.-based Taylor Farms Retail Inc., on May 9 and May 10, according to the release.
The brands are private labels: Wal-Mart has Marketside and Kroger Co. has Private Selection.
The Private Selection product was distributed in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The UPC numbers are 0-11110-91128-5; package codes are TFRS 130B 1503 KT34 and TFRS 130B 1803 KT34.
The Marketside product was distributed in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. The Universal Produce Code is 6-8113132900-2; the package code is TFRS 130B16.
The company is cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration and California Department of Public Health on the recall, according to the release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 22, 2012 - Taylor Farms Retail, Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall of Organic Baby Spinach with the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella following a random test conducted on a finished package of spinach by USDA.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. In rare cases the organism can get into the bloodstream and cause more serious complications.
