This Week in Mislabeled Product for Week Ending November 23, 2019

Chicken Product in Port Casing - BrucePac, a Silverton, Ore. establishment, is recalling approximately 55,550 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken sausage products due to misbranding, the products contain a pork casing, which is not declared on the label.  The problem was discovered when the firm notified FSIS that a third-party consultant identified the mislabeling.

Undeclared Sulfites in Dried Fruit - “Euroline Foods LLC” of Staten Island, NY is recalling its 17.65oz (500 gram) packages of “DRY FRUIT MIX “QUINCE COMPOTE” ” because they contain undeclared sulfites.  The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the 17.65oz (500 gram) packages of “DRY FRUIT MIX “QUINCE COMPOTE”“ which were not declared on the label. Analysis of the “DRY FRUIT MIX “QUINCE COMPOTE” ” revealed they contained 31.7 mg per serving.  (The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reaction in some asthmatics. )

WASHINGTON, Nov. 19, 2019 – BrucePac, a Silverton, Ore. establishment, is recalling approximately 55,550 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken sausage products due to misbranding, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The products contain a pork casing, which is not declared on the label.
The frozen, RTE chicken sausage items were produced on various dates from November 15, 2018 to June 24, 2019. The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels (PDF only)]
30-lb. bulk pack cases containing “GRILLED SLICED ITALIAN STYLE CHICKEN SAUSAGE” with lot codes 11158S, 12058S, 03189S, 06249S and 05029S
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-9267A” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to an institutional location in California.                               
The problem was discovered when the firm notified FSIS that a third-party consultant identified the mislabeling.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider. 
FSIS is concerned that some product may be in institutional freezers. Institutions that have purchased these products are urged not to serve them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms are notifying their customers of the recall and that actions are being taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

“Euroline Foods LLC” of Staten Island, NY is recalling its 17.65oz (500 gram) packages of “DRY FRUIT MIX “QUINCE COMPOTE” ” because they contain undeclared sulfites. Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.

The recalled “DRY FRUIT MIX “QUINCE COMPOTE” were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders. The product comes in 17.65oz (500 gram), clear plastic package marked with container code# 27032019. Product UPC code is 4605932006203.

No illness or allergic reactions involving this product have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the 17.65oz (500 gram) packages of “DRY FRUIT MIX “QUINCE COMPOTE”“ which were not declared on the label.
