Ukraine - Massive Salmonella Outbreak at Wedding

With much on Ukraine in our national news, why not a Ukrainian food safety news story.  This comes to us from our friend Volodymyr Gerainmovych.

Close to 130 people came down with salmonellosis after attending a wedding in a western Ukrainian village.  Many of the ill were children.  From testing, it appears that the Salmonella strain was in many of the foods served, thus indicating heavy cross contamination in the food preparation area.  And many of the other foods had other types of bacterial contamination.
Toasting with vodka , no matter how many shots, will not help.

Mass poisoning at a wedding in Bukovina: nearly 130 people fell ill

KIEV. October 7. UNN. After eating at a wedding in the village of Putyla, Bukovina poisoned 129 people, including 36 children. This UNN reported referring to the Chernivtsi Regional Laboratory Center MoH.


“According to the operative data as of 12:00 on October 7, 2019, a total of 129 people became ill, including 36 children who consumed meals at their wedding bar on September 29 and 30, 2019. Putyla of Putylsky district of Chernivtsi region ”, - the message reads.

It is reported that 73 people were hospitalized, including 19 children.

“... in particular, VN Vyzhnytsya District Hospital (Vashkivtsi) was hospitalized with 24 people, including 8 children, 41 people, including 10 children, in the OKU" Regional Clinical Hospital ". Chernivtsi - 7 people (adults), OKU "Regional Children's Clinical Hospital" - 1 (child). Other patients undergo outpatient treatment, medical observation. At the place of residence of the persons who were at the wedding, the measures for active detection of cases of diseases are continuing, ”- the message said.

According to the results of bacteriological studies isolated Salmonella enteritidis variant jena in the following food samples:

- trout fish in sour cream;

- hot smoked chicken thigh;

- jelly;

- fish fried in batter;

- marinated salmon fillet;

- smoked sausage;

- chicken roll;

- meat pie.

"At the same time, in some food samples - cheese ball, pork chop, homemade sausage, roll with egg, cream cake, isolated K. pneumonia, in the boiled water - K. pneumonia, E. Coli, in the herring - S. Epidermidis" , - the message says.

Earlier it was reported that the  number of hospitalizations increased to 52 people.
