Bakery Recall Pepperoni Rolls After Receiving Foreign Object Complaints

An Ohio establishment is recalling 3.000 lbs of frozen, ready-to-eat, beef and pork pepperoni rolls  a bakery product, after receiving three complaints of clear meat casings in the product.  So did someone not remove the casing from the pepperoni before slicing?

WASHINGTON, June 2, 2017– P&S Bakery, Inc., a Poland, Ohio establishment, is recalling approximately 2,959 pounds of pepperoni product that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically clear meat casing utilized in food production, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The frozen, ready-to-eat, beef and pork pepperoni roll item was produced on March 29, 2017. The following product is subject to recall: [View Label]
  • 5.25-oz. clear plastic wrapped packages containing 1 piece of Gia Russa brand “DOUBLE STUFFED Pepperoni Roll PEPPERONI & MOZZARELLA,” with lot/case code 17088.
The product subject to recall bears establishment number “EST. 27274” inside the USDA mark of inspection. This item was shipped to distributors and retail locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The problem was discovered after the firm received consumer complaints through one of their distributors.

FSIS has received no reports of injury or illness from consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers who have purchased this product are urged not to consume it. This product should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

POLAND — A Mahoning County bakery is recalling about 3,000 pounds of pepperoni product because the clear meat casing used in food production may be contaminated, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

P&S Bakery Inc. of Poland is recalling the frozen, ready-to-eat, beef and pork pepperoni rolls produced March 29.

The federal food safety and inspection service categorized the recall as Class I, meaning the health risk is considered high and “there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” the food safety and inspection service website states.

Subject to the recall are the 5.25-oz., clear plastic-wrapped packages containing one piece of Gia Russa brand “DOUBLE STUFFED Pepperoni Roll PEPPERONI & MOZZARELLA” with lot / case code 17088.

The product bears establishment number “EST. 27274” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The item was shipped to distributors and retail locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

John Houser, P&S quality control manager, stated in an email Monday the company investigated the matter after being made aware that three “isolated pepperoni rolls were found to have USDA approved processing meat casing in the filling.” He stated that the company’s quality assurance team made the decision “to remove the product matching that lot code from commerce” as part of its consumer safety initiative.

The problem was discovered after consumer complaints were made to one of the bakery’s distributors. There have been no reports of injury or illness related to consumption of the rolls, federal officials said.
