This Week in Mislabeled Products - Week Ending 3/16/18

Mislabeled Cinnamon Rolls - A Seattle, WA firm is recalling 106 units of Gourmet Cream Cheese Cinnamon Rolls because it may contain undeclared Egg.  The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the some of the Cinnamon Streusel Coffee Cake units, which contain egg, were mislabeled as Gourmet Cream Cheese Cinnamon Rolls. The Gourmet Cream Cheese Cinnamon Rolls labels do not list Egg in the label. [Labeling mistake]

Potential Allergen Carry-over Issue in Nuts A MN  is voluntarily recalling various products roasted in their facility and sold in consumer packaging that may contain undeclared peanuts and various tree nuts.  The recall was initiated after the potential for allergen cross-contact was identified during an inspection by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The issue was caused by a breakdown in the company's production scheduling processes.  Basically, they had carryover from product to product for every nut specific allergen - Peanuts, Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Cashews, Filberts, Macadamia Nuts, Pecans, Pistachios. [Scheduling and allergen clean out between products]

Wrong Sauce Packet - A NY retailer is recalling their Thai Sweet Chili Sauce Cup 1.5 oz. (UPC7-66630-98023) with a best-by of 7/4/18 or 7/5/18 because the product may contain undeclared egg.   The recall was initiated because an employee in one store discovered that the incorrect sauce had been packaged and labeled incorrectly. [Incorrect addition of sauce packet]

Wrong Label on Alka-Seltzer - Bayer is voluntarily recalling select Alka-Seltzer Plus® packages  because the ingredients on the front sticker may not match the actual product in the carton.

Wrong Cookies in the Cookie Bag - Chris’s Cookies has recalled one lot of its Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chip Cookie 12 Oz (340g) Bags (Barcode#: 0068 0752) after a report that Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies were discovered in a Chocolate Chip Cookie Bag, and therefore the product may contain undeclared peanuts.  The recall was initiated after it was discovered that a bag labeled as Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chip Cookies instead contained Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies. While there is a warning statement on the label that the product may contain traces of peanuts, “peanuts” is not listed as an ingredient.  [Wrong bags?]

No Allergens Listed on Label - Red Square Foods, Inc., a Somerset, N.J. establishment, is recalling an undetermined amount of various frozen meat and poultry ravioli and blintzes products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens - the products contain eggs, milk, and/or wheat, all known allergens, which are not declared on the product label. The problem was discovered by FSIS inspectors during routine label verification activities.

Wrong Label - Shirley’s Cookie Company Inc. of Claysburg, PA, is recalling its 16 ounce packages of "Chocolate Whoopie Pie" because they may contain undeclared peanuts.  The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the peanut-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.

Tamari Sauce Contains Soy - New Seasons Market is recalling 193 jars of New Seasons Market Hot & Sour Broth because it contains undeclared soy.  The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the broth containing soy was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of soy. The product contains Tamari sauce, which is made from soy beans.[Tamari sauce is similar to soy sauce, but contains little to no wheat, while soy sauce does have wheat]

This Week in Mislabeled Products for Week Ending February 8, 2020

Two print-and-apply labels developed incorrectly in that they missed allergens.

New Seasons Market has issued a recall for a total of 30 Grab N' Go Vegetarian Lasagna w/ Gluten-Free Pasta units (UPC 52390), with packed on dates 2/1-2/3, and sell by dates 2/6-2/9.  This product is being voluntarily recalled due to the presence of an undeclared allergen (soy).

Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling select bundt cakes and chocolate dipped cookies from stores in Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and Washington D.C. because they contain undeclared milk.  I guess they just missed the milk as an ingredient when designing the labels.  (But notice the precautionary label - made in a facility that processes 'everything'...so like it's a cake facility....chocolate cakes...fish cakes, crab cakes,.....)

Lunch Kits Recalled After Supplied Ingredient Was Subject to Cross Contact with Allergen

"The USDA FSIS is issuing a public health alert for Never Any! brand ready-to-eat (RTE) ham and cheese lunch kits containing chocolate chip cookies that may contain peanut, a known allergen, which is not declared on the finished product label. A recall was not requested because the products are believed to no longer be available for purchase.  The problem was discovered when the producing establishment was notified by their chocolate chip cookie supplier that the chocolate chip cookies may contain peanut residue, a known allergen, which is not declared on the label. "  The product was made in Canada by Maple Leaf Foods and was distributed by Aldi retail chain.

This is an issue which is getting more attention - an ingredient supplier's allergen control program. In this case, the supplier of the chocolate chip cookie item allowed allergen cross contact with peanuts. While this is a USDA product, the FDA covers this as part of the Preventive Control regulation under Supply Chain Preventive Control.  In the upcoming update to the FSPCA training curriculum that covers this regulation, there will be added attention to this issue.

A recall was not requested because the products are believed to no longer be available for purchase.

This Week in Mislabeled Products - 8/12/17 - 8/18/17

A very solid week of mislabeled items with 8 different entries.  Each has its own reason for error.

A MN company is recalling their Vanilla Cherry Pecan Muesli 12 oz. pouches because it may contain undeclared almonds. "The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product containing almonds was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of almonds. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in their manufacturing partner’s production and packaging processes."  So, the co-packer screwed up.

A NJ establishment, is recalling approximately 1,719 pounds of chicken caesar salad products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen - the product contains wheat which is not declared on the product label.  "The problem was discovered when the establishment received notification from the sole retailer of the chicken products that the incorrect ingredient label was applied to the chicken caesar salad products.  The ingredient label has a statement that the products were made without gluten containing ingredients, however, the Chicken Caesar Salad contains croutons made with wheat, and thus the wheat allergen was not declared on the label"  Ah...those darn croutons.

A NY company is recalling its 14 ounce packages of "CALIFORNIA ALOHA MIX" because they may contain undeclared tree nuts (Almonds, Walnuts and Cashews).  "The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed that the tree nut containing product was distributed in packages that did not reveal the presence of tree nuts (Almonds, Walnuts and Cashews)."  This looks to be a case of cross contact, probably in the packaging process.  NOTE - this product does have the precautionary label - "Manufactured in a facility that processes/packages products that contain peanuts, tree nuts, milk, soy, and wheat."  (picture of label below).

An IL based distributor, is recalling its 7 ounce and 14 ounce packages of “Gazab Green Raisins (Chinese)”, because it may contain undeclared sulfites. "The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the sulfite-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a product packaging process when creating labels."  So the company was using generic packaging with print-on-demand labels.  Easy for these labels to not be checked well enough when being input into the machine and when selecting the right label code when printing.

A St. Louis supermarket chain is recalling two deli items due to the presence of undeclared fish (bonito, cod), undeclared lobster, crab, and shrimp in scampi butter and undeclared soy and wheat in cabernet grille butter. The recall was initiated after it was discovered by store personnel during an internal audit. "Subsequent investigation indicated the omissions were the result of ingredient changes in the products".

Litehouse Inc.. a WA based company, is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of its OPA by Litehouse Ranch because it may contain undeclared eggs.  "The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing egg was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of eggs. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a packaging error."

Another WA establishment, is recalling approximately 4,805 pounds of poultry products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens. The products are mislabeled as Chicken Chile Verde that contain milk and soy, but contain Turkey Meatloaf, which has additional allergens, eggs and fish (anchovies), that are not declared on the product label.  The problem was discovered after the firm received consumer complaints of the wrong meal inside the retail boxes.

A Colorado company is recalling boxes of Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix because it may contain undeclared milk .  "The recall was initiated by Madhava Natural Sweeteners after it was discovered that one ingredient in the chocolate chips may include a milk product."

Blue Bell Ice Cream Recalls All Products, Additional Cases Linked Through Retrospective DNA Matching

The CDC is reporting that 10 Listeria related illnesses dating back to 2010 have been attributed to Blue Bell Ice Cream.  While 8 cases had been reported, the additional 2 cases were identified through a 'retrospective analysis' using DNA data (verified via whole genome sequencing) to match isolates to different illness cases.
Blue Bell had recalled all of its products at all of its facilities.  A very bold move done due of the uncertainty of findings in the facility and inability to find the exact source.

Juice Products May Contain Milk Protein - Hiland Dairy is announcing a voluntary recall of two products produced at the Omaha, Nebraska facility, over concerns the products may contain milk protein that could affect those individuals that have sensitivity to milk allergens.  Hiland Dairy initially learned of a potential issue during internal quality control testing at the Omaha facility.

Tofu Product Does Not Declare Soy on Label - Rico Brand of Salt Lake City, Utah is recalling Tofu Breakfast Burrito, because it may contain undeclared Soy [And tofu is fermented soy, so must realize that some consumers may not recognize that fact?].  The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product “Tofu Breakfast Burrito” containing Soybean was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of Soybean. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's packaging processes.

Supplier Mistakenly Labels Coconut Macaroons as Oatmeal Cookies -  Dollar General Corporation announced a voluntary recall of a lot of its 12-ounce packages of Clover Valley® Iced Oatmeal Cookies  over concerns of undeclared milk and tree nuts.  Dollar General initially learned of a potential issue based upon information received from a store level employee. Two Flavored Cake Mixes Recalled by GM Due to Potential E. coli O121 Contamination

Two flavors of cake mix under the Betty Crocker brand have been added to the flour recall by General Mills.   Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix and Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix have been recalled due to the potential for the flour to contain E. coli O121, a STEC strain.

The baking process will eliminate the organism, but of course there are those who are prone to eat raw cookie dough or offer it to children (this is worse because children would be more susceptible to infection.  FDA issued an Advisory against eating raw cookie dough.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Recalled After Complaints of Choking

MondelÄ“z Global LLC is recalling certain lots of Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies after receiving complaints for "potential adverse health effects"  (probably a potential choking issue or difficulty in swallowing) due to the product may contain an unexpected solidified ingredient.   This was probably the result of improper mixing where an ingredient formed hardened particulates in formed cookie rather than a uniform chewy texture. "A spokeswoman for the snack company, said in an email Wednesday to The Washington Post that there were instances in which the cornstarch “did not fully incorporate in the mixing procedure and solidified in the baking process.” Link

From a Food Safety Plan design perspective, this would be regarded as a potential physical hazard issue to be included at the ingredient mixing step.

CDC Investigate E. coli Outbreak Linked to Cake Mix

The CDC is investigating an outbreak of pathogenic E. coli, strain O121, that has been linked to cake mix. To this point, there have been 16 illness with 7 of those being hospitalized.  Sick people range in age from 2 to 73 years, with a median age of 13, and 100% are female.

The key here....do not eat raw cookie dough.  Cookie dough must be cooked per directions.   Along with that, carefully clean up surfaces and equipment after use.  Remember that the raw flour on surfaces can be potentially contaminated.

E. coli infection is nothing to mess with.  It can lead to bloody diarrhea, high fever, and worse, can produce a toxin that is detrimental to the kidney.

Allergen Free Tiger Nut Flour Gains Popularity as Wheat Flour Alternative

Tiger nut flour is gaining popularity as an gluten-free alternative to wheat flour. Actually, it is not a nut either, so it is allergen free. So what is tiger nut flour?

Tiger nut or chufa is a tuber from the plant Cyperus esculentus. This tuber is ground and sifted to produce a flour said to have favorable characteristics. Chufa is an ancient food source originating in the Eastern Hemisphere, primarily Africa. In the Western Hemisphere, it has been considered an invasive weed in certain areas.

"Tiger nut flour is rich in calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron and zinc, vitamins C and E and folic acid, as well as unsaturated fats and proteins. It is low in carbohydrates, which makes it ideal for Paleo and Ketogenic diets, and is high in fiber and antioxidants."

"Tiger nut flour is ideal for gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, vegan, keto and paleo diets and can be cooked, baked or fried. While the moist, chewy texture is ideal for a number of applications and recipes, the milky sugary taste is perfect for baked goods as well as sweet breads and tart shells and can be used to add ‘bulk’ to no-bake treats."

And you can even make beer from Chufa.

Five Reasons Why Tiger Nut Flour Is The Trendiest Alternative Flour

Tiger nut (or chufa nut) flour, which is ground from tubers that grow on the yellow nutsedge plant, is gaining popularity globally as the perfect substitute for wheat flour, given its gluten-free properties, its status as a super food and its natural sweet taste. The flour, which is made by grinding tiger nut tubers and sieving the powder through a fine screen, acts like almond flour, adding moisture and chewiness but with a sweeter taste.

Grocery Stores Report Recall of Flour Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination

According to news reports, two grocery chains are recalling Pillsbury flour in 5lb bags for potential Salmonella contamination. The chains, Publix and Winn Dixie are both in the Southeast US.

FDA has not yet posted a recall on their website, so there is limited information.

Salmonella can be found in flour and becomes an issue when items are undercooked or not cooked (like raw cookie dough) or there is cross contamination in the kitchen when the contaminated flour gets onto ready-to-eat food items.
