Listeria Outbreak with 20 cases and 4 Deaths Linked to RTE Pasta

The FDA, USDA and CDC with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to prepared meals. There have been 20 cases with 19 being hospitalized and 4 deaths.

Case Counts
Total Illnesses: 20
Hospitalizations: 19
Deaths: 4
Last Illness Onset: September 11, 2025
States with Cases: CA, FL, IL, IN, LA, MI, MN, MO, NC, NV, OH, SC, TX, UT, VA
Product Distribution: Nationwide

The pasta supplier, Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, CA, does not sell affected products direct to retail. On September 25, 2025, the supplier of the affected pasta, recalled certain lots of pre-cooked pasta including fettucine, linguine, and farfalle (bowtie), after a sample of linguine pasta collected and tested by FreshRealm tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. FreshRealm recalled linguine and meatball product which was under the Marketside (Walmart) brand. Additional product recalled include Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 12.3 oz – best-by date of June 26, 2025, or prior; Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 32.8 oz – best-by date of June 27, 2025, or prior; Home Chef Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 12.5 oz – best-by date of June 19, 2025, or prior; and TRADER JOE’S CAJUN STYLE BLACKENED CHICKEN BREAST FETTUCINE ALFREDO” with “best if used by” dates 9/20/2025, 9/24/2025, or 9/27/2025.

The contaminated ingredient was found in response to the investigation, "FreshRealm Inc., began testing individual ingredients used to produce their Marketside-brand linguine with beef meatballs & marinara sauce meal, and the company’s ingredient testing of linguine pasta samples were confirmed positive for Listeria monocytogenes by FreshRealm’s contracted lab. On September 27, 2025, FDA was informed by FreshRealm that whole genome sequencing performed by the company’s contracted lab confirmed the linguine sample is positive for the same strain of Listeria that was detected in the company’s chicken alfredo meals, which were recalled on June 17, 2025. It is also the same strain of Listeria that is linked to causing illnesses in this outbreak."

Being a USDA regulated facility, the company is not subject to Preventive Controls, and with that, does not have to have a Supply Chain Preventive Control, which would be a must for the type of product (heat and serve which is ready-to-eat).   As this is the case, the processor would have recognized Listeria as hazard on the incoming RTE pasta (as well as other ingredients) and would have ensure that the supplier had an active Listeria Control Program.

As for the pasta supplier, they do operate under Preventive Controls and would definitely need to have a Sanitation Preventive Control to ensure that recontamination does not occur after pasta preparation.   Pasta preparation require boiling pasta which would eliminate Listeria, however, it can be recontaminated in the post-process environment.  With a Sanitation Preventive Control, monitoring and verification steps would be present for ensuring the food contact surfaces and the overall post-process environment were free from Listeria.   This was not the case with this facility however.

Unfortunately, the continued push for RTE meals requires more attention by companies producing that product.  If this had been a product to be cooked, the likelihood of illnesses would have been reduced or eliminated.   This however, would not eliminate the needs for Listeria controls because one would still need to be concerned about undercooking.

Corn Dogs and Sausage on Stick Products Recalled for Foreign Material - Wood

The Hillshire Brands Company, a Haltom City, Tex. establishment, is recalling approximately 58,000,000 pounds of corn dog and sausage on a stick products that may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically pieces of wood embedded in the batter.  The problem was discovered after the establishment received multiple consumer complaints, five of which involved injuries. The Hillshire Brands Company conducted an investigation and determined that the wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering.

In this case, wood used for the sticks has made its way into the process to end up as a foreign material.  So perhaps rework?

Aroma Candles - Are Wax Melt (non-burning) Better than Regular Candles? No

I know that there are some big aroma candle users out there, so this is for you.  A recently released study showed that aroma wax melts (perfumed wax heated to the point of melting to release the 'aromas') produce more health impacting chemicals similar to those produce by a diesel engine...not that many are have a diesel engine to improve relaxation while sitting in a soothing bath with rose pedals. (This is too close to my ongoing fear of getting picked off by a speeding forklift in some overly dark warehouse).
"Our findings reveal that terpenes released from scented wax melts react with indoor atmospheric ozone (O3) to initiate new particle formation (NPF) events, resulting in significant indoor atmospheric nanoparticle concentrations (>106 cm–3) comparable to those emitted by combustion-based scented candles, gas stoves, diesel engines, and natural gas engines. We show that scented wax melt-initiated NPF events can result in significant respiratory exposures, with nanoparticle respiratory tract deposited dose rates similar to those determined for combustion-based sources."
So there you go, don't be buying one of those fancy plug-in wax melts. You can get the same terpene high with those cheap burning aroma candles and at least get the flickering flame.

While this work focused on wax melts, I would guess the same would apply for those plug-in scented oil units that have become popular.

As for me, I have gone unscented.  I think about all those chemicals added to provide some artificial smell....like laundry detergent, or worse yet, drier sheets.  Clean is the absence of smell.  As a former boss used to say, don't use agents that mask the smell, because if not properly clean, we want to know.

PA Firm Recalls Cheese After Listeria Positive Sample

Goot Essa LLC of Howard, PA is recalling one lot totaling 64 pounds, batch 33, of its Goot Essa brand Der Mutterschaf Cheese because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in one sample from the batch. Sampling of similar batches revealed no contamination. Goot Essa will work closely with the FDA to conclude the investigation.

It appears that good corrective action limited this to one lot.

Goot Essa brand Der Mutterschaf Cheese was distributed to 7 customers in New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut, and Montana and it was distributed through retail stores and restaurants.

Health Alert Issued for Meatball Linguine Product After Pasta Ingredient Potentially Contaminated with Listeria

USDA-FSIS is issuing a public health alert for Marketside brand (Walmart) ready-to-eat meals containing pre-cooked pasta that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  The alert covers “MARKETSIDE LINGUINE WITH BEEF MEATBALLS & MARINARA SAUCE” with “best if used by” dates Sep. 22, 2025; Sep. 24, 2025; Sep. 25, 2025; Sep. 29, 2025; Sep. 30, 2025; and Oct. 1, 2025.

From the announcement, "The producing company collected samples of the FDA-regulated, pre-cooked pasta used as an ingredient in these products as part of the ongoing investigation related to the Listeria outbreak linked to chicken fettuccine alfredo meals. The test confirmed that the linguine pasta was positive for Lm and further testing is ongoing to determine if the Lm is genetically related to the specific outbreak strain. FSIS previously issued a recall notice linked to the Listeria outbreak in June and continues to coordinate with FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state public health partners."

FreshRealm, the company producing the final product, has two locations where the pasta was used as an ingredient - San Clemente, CA (Est ID M50784+P50784) and Indianapolis, IN (Est ID M47718+P47718).  It seems that the pasta was produced by Nate’s Fine Foods, Roseville, CA as that company was listed as the contact on the USDA release.

We may see additional recalls as the investigation moves forward.

FDA Issues Follow-up Public Advisory on Frozen Shrimp From Indonesia After Cesium Contamination Event

FDA issues a broad public advisory on the Indonesian shrimp where cesium (Cs) was found.  There are four companies that issued recalls with some of those companies expanding their initial recall.

Some important points
  • At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. marketplace.
  • FDA detected Cs-137 in a single shipment of imported frozen shrimp from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati that did not enter U.S. commerce. The level of Cs-137 detected in the detained shipment was approximately 68 Bq/kg, which is below FDA’s Derived Intervention Level for Cs-137 of 1200 Bq/kg. At this level, the product would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.
  • The primary health effect of concern following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (e.g., through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body.
  • FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by Customs & Border Protection (CBP), but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137, to recommend that firms conduct a recall.
  • FDA has also added PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati to a new import alert for chemical contamination to stop products from this firm from coming into the U.S. until the firm has resolved the conditions that gave rise to the appearance of the violation.

Is Cold Pizza Better Than Hot Pizza?

Hot pizza vs leftover cold pizza?  This article lays out this question and provides some science-ish support.
"Scientists speculate on why this group prefers chilled pizza. Chilling foods mellows the flavors, particularly those that are bitter or sweet. Meanwhile, the taste receptors for saltiness are stronger in cold temperatures. This mutes the sweetness of the tomato sauce, causing the pizza to taste saltier. Other, more delicate flavors, such as the herbs in the sauce, can also come through stronger."
While the melding of flavors is important, however I think there are factors that are more important.  First, we must recognize that not all pizza is the same, and there are big differences on which will be better cold or better reheated.

The dough is a major factor.  A very thick dough can be overly chewy when cold and is better on reheating.  And if that thick dough was overly doughy initially, reheating it can make it better than it was initially.

As for cheese, it depends on the type of cheese.  Some cheeses are better hot, while some may be better cold.  I am not the cheese expert (our cheese expert retired), but as a pizza aficionado (grew up in NE PA, pizza capital of the world, and worked for a real pizza shop (not one of these cookie-cutter chains) for 4 years (age 15-18)), I have seen some pizza cheese turn from excellent hot to nothing more than rubber when cold.  This is not only a textural issues, but flavors as well.

The beverage served as a lot to do with this as well.  You can pair hot pizza with beer or wine, but with cold pizza, I just don't see it.  I like my cold pizza with milk.

So do you have a favorite pizza joint and is that pizza good when cold?

FDA Issues Warning Letter to NJ Firm for FSVP Issues Brought to Light by Supplier-related Salmonella Outbreak

FDA issued a Warning Letter to DingMoo LLC, doing business as (DBA) Dingman’s Dairy, Paterson, NJ after finding issues with compliance to the FSVP requirements.

The inspection was initiated in response to a multistate outbreak investigation involving Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to a food item manufactured by the company's foreign supplier.  Although not stated in the Warning Letter, the foreign supplier was Sweet Cream, whose mini pasties were responsible for 18 cases of Salmonella infection, posted in January of 2024 (https://pennstatefoodsafety.blogspot.com/2025/02/salmonella-outbreak-linked-to-imported.html).

So DingMoo was importing from a company that just had a Salmonella outbreak.  FDA found that DingMoo
  • Did not establish and follow written procedures to ensure that you import foods only from foreign suppliers you have approved based on an evaluation of the foreign supplier’s performance and the risk posed by the food
  • Did not establish and follow adequate written procedures for ensuring that appropriate foreign supplier verification activities are conducted with respect to the foods
  • Must conduct a written hazard analysis for each type of imported food to determine whether there are any hazards requiring a control
  • Did not provide documentation that the foreign suppliers’ performance was evaluated including the risk posed by the food.
To summarize, the company should have had a FSVP in place for each imported food.  It is also important that the company  know that their supplier was just involved in a Salmonella outbreak.  This would call for a review of the hazard analysis, if they had one, to determine if their plan captures the risk associated with that supplier.  At the very least, knowing that their supplier was involved in an outbreak, they should expect a regulatory inspection.

Costco Issues Recall for Prosecco Due to Bottle Shattering

Costco issued a recall notice for Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene between April 25, 2025 and August 26, 2025 due to potential shattering of the bottles, even when those bottles are not being handled or in use.

Prosecco is not bottle fermented like Champagne.  Rather, it uses he tank method, aka the Charmat method where the fine receives the secondary fermentation in a pressurized tank keeping the gas in in the wine.  The wine is then filtered and bottled under pressure (Wine Enthusiast).  So this is either an over-pressurized wine or there are issues with the bottles (not properly rated for the pressure).  Another possibility is there is a dosage added to the bottle at the filling step and this may have been off.    We're going to bet on a bottle issue.

Product was distributed in IA, IL, IN, KY, MI, MN, MO, NE, OH, SD, and WI.

Another Recall of Frozen Shrimp Due to Linkage to FDA Warning for Potential Cesium Contamination

AquaStar (USA) Corp of Seattle, WA is recalling various shrimp products under the Kroger and Aquastar brands due to potential Cs-137 contamination.  This product was linked to the August 19, 2024 FDA Warning for frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods) of Indonesia after U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) alerted FDA to the detection of Cs-137 in shipping containers at four U.S. ports.

New Ebola Outbreak in Africa with 81 Confirmed Cases

This is not a food related issue, but of interest from a microbiology / communicable disease perspective.
There is a new Ebola outbreak that has been identified in the Republic of the Congo.  "This outbreak began with a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital on August 20 and died five days later. Two health workers who treated her also became infected and died. By September 15, there were 81 confirmed cases and 28 deaths, including four health workers."

"Why are health authorities worried?  The largest Ebola epidemic on record began in Guinea in 2013 and spread into Liberia and Sierra Leone. It infected more than 28,000 people and killed more than 11,000."

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has declared a new Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province. It’s caused by the most severe strain: the Zaire Ebola virus.

This outbreak began with a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital on August 20 and died five days later. Two health workers who treated her also became infected and died. By September 15, there were 81 confirmed cases and 28 deaths, including four health workers.

The DRC has had 15 prior Ebola epidemics, with the largest in 2019 and the most recent in 2022.

Europe - Ongoing Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Italian Tomatoes

There has been an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella linked to tomatoes from Sicily. "Between 1 January 2023 and 30 August 2025, 289 confirmed cases of Salmonella Strathcona ST2559 have been reported in 19 EU/EEA countries and three countries outside the EU/EEA (the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada)."  However, this specific strain appears to have been an issue since 2011.

This seems incredible that an outbreak of this magnitude continues over three growing seasons.  I know many see the outbreaks occurring in the US and think there are issues with our food supply, but it is not better in Europe as many think it is.  In fact, issues like this in Europe would receive far more press and regulatory action in the US.

Multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Strathcona
  • Between 1 January 2023 and 30 August 2025, 289 confirmed cases of Salmonella Strathcona ST2559 have been reported in 19 EU/EEA countries and three countries outside the EU/EEA (the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada).
  • Isolates genetically closely related to the outbreak strain have been detected since 2011, indicating a recurring public health concern.
  • Epidemiological, microbiological, and traceability investigations in 2023 and 2024 identified small tomatoes from the Sicily region of Italy as the vehicle of infection.
  • The risk for new infections remains if seasonal deliveries of contaminated produce continue. In 2025, several countries have reported more than 30 additional cases, mainly between June and August, with Italy reporting the highest number. ECDC is liaising with FWD-Net and EFSA to monitor and coordinate response efforts

NJ Firm Recalls Sauce Pouches Due to Elevated Lead Content

Sprout Organics of Montvale, NJ, has initiated a voluntary recall of one lot of Sprout Organics® Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach because it may contain elevated levels of lead.  The product, a 3.5-ounce pouch, was sold in Walgreens and some independent stores in the US South region with most sales occurring between September and December 2024. The product was not sold in any other large grocery chain besides Walgreens.

No information was provided in the recall notice on how the lead was detected.   The company states on their website that they use a third-party laboratory to test their products, so perhaps this testing detected elevated lead levels.

Ohio Firm Expands Recall of Cheese Due to Listeria Contamination

The Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op facility in Middlefield, OH is expanding its August 18th recall to include additional product due to Listeria contamination.  The company is recalling one lot of Sunrise Creamery Dilly Pickle Monterey Jack Cheese with Dill Pickles in 6 oz. and 1.25 lb. packages, one lot of Organic Gouda Cheese in 8 oz. packages, and specific lots of Mozzarella/Provolone Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Pepper Jack Cheese, Swiss Cheese, and Monterey Jack Cheese packaged as 5 lb. loaves or 5 lb. shredded bags because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The most recent recall notice that that this recall was initiated after testing by the company revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in finished product and on surfaces of cutting equipment.  The initial recall notice stated that the recall was after finished product tested positive, so this would indicate that the recall was expanded after the investigation found Listeria on the food contact surfaces further indicating lack of Listeria control by the facility.

CDC Reports Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Home Delivery Meal. Raises Concerns for Risk Associated with RTE Meals by Mail

CDC reported a Salmonella outbreak linked to home delivered meals.   There have been 16 reported cases of Salmonella infection reported from 10 different states.  The product is sold through an online-based company, Metabolic Meals, whose location is not apparent.   This is a ready-to-eat, reheat only, type of food, which means the producer is fully preparing the product.  There are 3 date codes involved, but no recall was issued due to the fact that all product is shipped immediately and the shelf-life is short.

There have been an increasing number of these companies that market these 'chef' prepared, home delivered meals.   This outbreak should raise questions as to the safety of this food and the operations that prepare it.   Unlike a restaurant or store that you can actually see or inspections that you can obtain, people do not have much information on these operations.

Looking at the website, I was not able to determine where the food is actually made.  Was it made in some shotgun shack?  Who is inspecting these operations?  Perhaps some municipality where the inspectors are unaware of issues of RTE home delivered meals?  Home delivered often skate the boundary between local and Federal inspection.

It is important to point out that home-delivered meals, especially RTE refrigerated meals, have some risks that need to be controlled.  First is proper preparation where cooking and cooling steps must be adequately addressed.  But then there is the delivery component, where safeguards must be in place to prevent temperature abuse during transport.

There is little information outside of the website to make valid decisions.  Slick websites with appealing food are not sufficient and can be misleading.  I was able to find a physical location for the facility in St. Louis MO.  It is a USDA inspected facility.

NY Firm Recalls Frozen Vegetables After Testing Finds Listeria

Endico Potatoes of Mount Vernon NY, is recalling Endico brand Peas and Carrots and Mixed Vegetables because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  The recall was the result of sampling done by the state of Pennsylvania at one of the distributors which revealed that the finished products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The company has ceased distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

There are currently only two date codes of product being recalled.  As as have seen with other Listeria-related recalls, these recalls can often be expanded as the company and regulators find that the company did not have adequate controls in place meaning that more lots may have contamination.
