Epidemiologic and laboratory data show that cantaloupes are contaminated with Salmonella and are making people in this outbreak sick.
Canada is also investigating this outbreak and has linked illnesses in Canada to Malichita brand cantaloupes.
Since the last update on November 24, CDC has added a second strain of Salmonella (Oranienburg) to this outbreak investigation after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency found this strain in a sample of Malichita brand cantaloupes. Two people in the United States are infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg.
Epidemiologic Data
Since the last update on November 24, 18 more illnesses have been reported. As of November 28, 117 people infected with one of the outbreak strains of Salmonella have been reported from 34 states (see map). Illnesses started on dates ranging from October 17, 2023, to November 14, 2023 (see timeline). Of 103 people with information available, 61 (59%) have been hospitalized. Two deaths have been reported from Minnesota.
The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella. In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.
Public health officials collect many different types of information from sick people, including their age, race, ethnicity, other demographics, and the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. This information provides clues to help investigators identify the source of the outbreak.

State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. Of the 52 people interviewed, 40 (77%) reported eating cantaloupe. This percentage was significantly higher than the 19.6% of respondents who reported eating cantaloupe in the FoodNet Population Survey—a survey that helps estimate how often people eat various foods linked to diarrheal illness. Of the 40 people who reported eating cantaloupe, 19 people specifically reported eating pre-cut cantaloupe and 11 reported eating whole cantaloupe.
Fourteen people in this outbreak resided at long-term care facilities when they got sick. Of six interviewed, four reported eating cantaloupe.
Seven children in this outbreak attended childcare centers when they got sick. Of six children with information available, all six ate or maybe ate cantaloupe.
Laboratory Data
WGS analysis of bacteria from 117 people’s samples did not predict resistance to any antibiotics. More information is available at the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) site.
Public Health Actions
Three more recalls have been issued since the last update.
On November 27, 2023, Kwik Trip recalled pre-cut cantaloupe and fruit mixes.
On November 28, Bix Produce recalled pre-cut fruit cups.
On November 29, GHGA recalled pre-cut cantaloupe products sold at Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Trader Joe’s.
CDC is advising you to not eat recalled fruits and to not eat pre-cut cantaloupes if you don’t know whether Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupes were used. CDC also advises long-term care facilities, childcare centers, hospitals, and other facilities that care for people at higher risk for severe Salmonella illness to not serve recalled fruits and to not serve cantaloupe that was supplied pre-cut if they don’t know whether Malichita or Rudy brand cantaloupes were used.

Los Angeles, CA, December 1, 2023…Pacific Trellis Fruit, LLC is initiating a voluntary recall of 4,872 cases of Malichita brand whole cantaloupe. The voluntary recall is due to the FDAs ongoing investigation of an outbreak involving Malichita brand cantaloupe. The cantaloupes have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. In rare cases the organism can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The products were distributed between October 18th - 26th in California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, and Canada and sold in various retail supermarkets. The whole cantaloupe is packed in corrugated cartons, the price look-up sticker is labeled “Malichita.”

The remainder of the recalled "Fresh Cut Fruit Mix containing Cantaloupes" under Cut Fruit Express and food service packaging was distributed through in MN, WI and IL via retail and food service delivery. The USE BY DATES were 11/4/23, 11/5/23 and 11/6/23.
The retail product comes in with Use by Date 11/4/23, 11/5/23, 11/6/23 on the top label and food service product comes with a date label of 11/3/23 on the bag, tray or a label with use by date on the pail.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem with our products.
Cut Fruit Express learned that their supplier is issuing a recall on Cantaloupes for potential contamination of Salmonella. Cut Fruit Express is initiating a recall on the affected product that contains the recalled Cantaloupe. The affected products were shipped between October 24th through October 26th, 2023.
Consumers, restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers should not eat, sell, or serve recalled cantaloupe or recalled products containing cantaloupe.
Some consumers freeze cantaloupe for later use. Consumers should check their freezers and throw away recalled fresh or cut cantaloupe that was frozen for later use.
If you cannot tell if your cantaloupe is part of the recall, do not eat or use it, throw it away.

CONLEY, GA – November 29, 2023 - GHGA, LLC is voluntarily recalling select fresh-cut products made from whole cantaloupe subject to a previously announced product recall initiated by Sofia Produce, LLC dba Trufresh, due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
All GHGA fresh-cut fruit products associated with the recalled whole cantaloupe associated with the outbreak have expired, however consumers who have purchased these items and may have frozen them for later use are urged not to consume the products and to dispose of them immediately or return the items to their local store for a full refund.
As of November 29, there have been no illnesses reported related to GHGA fresh-cut products. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the whole cantaloupe recalled by Sofia Produce, LLC dba Trufresh, however, as of November 29, no illnesses have been confirmed to be associated with GHGA products.
The fresh-cut fruit products containing recalled cantaloupe were distributed to Kroger stores in Alabama and Georgia, Sprouts stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and Trader Joe’s retail stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The products are packaged in clear square or round plastic containers, marked with a “sell by” date and a lot code on the label.
Voluntarily recalled items include the specific products, lot codes, and expiration dates below. No other products are affected.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – December 5, 2023 – TGD Cuts, LLC has initiated a voluntary recall of the specific fresh-cut fruit cup, clamshell and tray products listed below because they contain cantaloupe from TruFresh which has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometime fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare instances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Due to the expanded recall of fresh, whole cantaloupes by TruFresh, on November 28, 2023, TGD Cuts, LLC is issuing this recall. Cantaloupes recalled by TruFresh were used as a raw material in TGD Cuts, LLC fruit cup, clamshell and tray products listed below.
This recall includes fresh-cut fruit cup, clamshell and tray products containing cantaloupe listed in the table below with use-by dates of November 2, 2023, through November 24, 2023. Products were distributed to retail and food service locations in Maryland, D.C., Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and South Carolina. No other products are affected.
There have been no reported illnesses to date associated with the fruit cup, clamshell and tray products listed below.
Consumers, restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers should not eat, sell, or serve recalled cantaloupe or recalled products containing cantaloupe.
Some consumers freeze cantaloupe for later use. Consumers should check their freezers and throw away recalled fresh or cut cantaloupe that was frozen for later use.
If you are not sure if your cantaloupe is part of the recall, do not eat or use it and throw it away.
These products are beyond their usable shelf-life and are no longer expected to be in commerce.
TGD Cuts, LLC takes the safety and integrity of the products it sells seriously. If customers have product affected by this voluntary recall, they should discard it immediately or return it to their local store for a full refund.
