Two Retailers Issue Recalls Associated with Mann Packing Recall of Produce Due to Listeria

Whole Foods and Albertsons have issued recalls associated with vegetable items from Mann Packing Company due to Listeria.  Mann Packing issued their recall on November 3rd.

The Listeria issue evidently started with testing done by the CFIA.  From an article in The Packer,  "According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Mann Packing recall was an update to a Nov. 1 recall of six Compliments (Sobeys) brand fresh-cut products. That recall was also an expansion of an Oct. 30 recall, of Compliments Sweet Kale Blend. The kale item was recalled following a test from the Canadian agency that detected Listeria monocytogenes."

FDA Announcement

In response to Mann Packing Co., Inc’s recall of vegetable products, Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling multiple products from its stores in the United States. Mann Packing issued the recall because the vegetables may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths and fetal infection among pregnant women.

Albertsons has recalled more than 70 fresh-cut vegetable items in relation to a Mann Packing Co. recall, including salad bar items, over concerns of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Sobeys stores in Canada and Wegmans stores have also issued recalls, along with Mann Packing, which processed the items for the retailers’ private labels. Sobeys issued recalls on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 after a bag of Sweet Kale Blend, tested by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, tested positive for listeria.

After being alerted by the Canadian agency and the Food and Drug Administration, Mann Packing issued a recall for more than 100 stock-keeping units on Nov. 3. Wegmans issued a recall Nov. 4, and Albertsons did the same Nov. 5.

Also on Nov. 5, GHNW LLC of Clackamas, Ore., recalled 10-ounce trays of Mushroom Stiry Fry Blend and 16-ounce trays for Stir Fry Blend. Both contain Broccoli Slaw from Mann Packing, according to a notice on the FDA recall site. The two products were sold at QFC and/or Fred Meyer stores in Washington and Oregon.

No illnesses have been linked to any of the recalled products.

Albertsons’ banners involved in the recall include Alberstsons, Safeway, Vons, Pak N Save, Amigos, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Haggen stores, according to a recall notice on the retailer’s website.

The recalled products went to stores in: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Many of the recalled products are blends, mixes or prepared foods and are from the produce department, salad bar and delis. Products include quiche, stir fry mixes, vegetable trays, vegetable steam packs and snack packs with hummus, cheese and grapes.

The recall covers all production before the “sell thru date” for all items, which range from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11.

Mann Packing Co. is recalling products in the U.S. and Canada after federal health agencies in the two countries notified the company of a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.

Mann issued its recall Nov. 3 in response to a notice by the Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, according to a news release from Mann posted on the FDA recall website. No illnesses in the U.S. or Canada have been linked to the recalled products.

The U.S. recall covers more than a dozen brands and more than 100 fresh-cut products, including organic items.

They include:
•Del Monte: Better Breaks (Green Chile, Pomodoro and Summer Corn);
•H-E-B: broccoli products, including organic;
•Hungryroot: delivered meal kit items, including salad blends;
•Mann’s/Mann’s Snacking Favorites/Mann’s Organics: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, stir fry, cauliflower products, CraveABowls, and Nourish Bowls;
•Marketside/Marketside Organic (Walmart): broccoli products, Cauliflower Crumbles and vegetable medleys; and
•Signature Farms (Albertsons): broccoli and cauliflower products.

The recalled products in the U.S. have “Best If Enjoyed By” dates of Oct. 11 to Nov. 16. The full list of recalled products in the U.S. and Universal Product Codes is available online.

In Canada, most of the products are under different Mann Packing brands, and all have “best before” dates up to and including Nov. 16.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Mann Packing recall was an update to a Nov. 1 recall of six Compliments (Sobeys) brand fresh-cut products. That recall was also an expansion of an Oct. 30 recall, of Compliments Sweet Kale Blend. The kale item was recalled following a test from the Canadian agency that detected Listeria monocytogenes.
