This Week in Mislabeled Product - Week Ending Sept 4, 2018

H&C Food Inc of Brooklyn, NY is recalling the Frozen Fuzhou Fish Balls and the Fish Balls,because they may contain undeclared wheat, pork, egg, and crustacean. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing wheat, pork, egg and crustacean were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg and crustacean. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball today alerted consumers that the “Lily Bulb” product (photo attached) distributed by Allied Imports Inc. of 267 52nd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11220 was found to contain sulfites, which are not declared on the product label.  Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by staff at the New York State Food Laboratory revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics.

H&C Food Inc of Brooklyn, NY is recalling the Frozen Fuzhou Fish Balls and the Fish Balls,because they may contain undeclared wheat, pork, egg, and crustacean. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, pork, egg and crustacean run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The Fuzhou Fish Balls and the Fish Balls was distributed to supermarkets in Queens, NY as well as the following states: CA, VA, GA, MD, MA and TX and reached consumers mainly through retail stores.

The recalling Frozen Fish Balls came with two different packages. First, the frozen fish balls are in the red and white plastic bag with gold and black font that are written Fish Balls and the size for this is NET WT: 14OZ (400g), UPC: 6 953006 4 50093. The Fuzhou Fish Balls are in the blue and white plastic bag with gold and white font that are written Fuzhou Fish Balls and there are two sizes: Net WT: 14 OZ (400g), UPC: 6 953640 050017 and Net WT:4.5 lbs. (2043g), UPC: 6 953640 05000. These Frozen Fish Balls don’t have the expiration date or lot code on the package, however, they can last for 18 months.

There are no illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing wheat, pork, egg and crustacean were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg and crustacean. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.

Ball today alerted consumers that the “Lily Bulb” product (photo attached) distributed by Allied Imports Inc. of 267 52nd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11220 was found to contain sulfites, which are not declared on the product label.  People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites may run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date to this Department in connection with this product.

The “Lily Bulb” is packaged in a 10 oz. (283 g) plastic bag with a clear window.  The product does not have a use by code but it is labeled as a product of China and has a UPC code of 6-43719-11002-0.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by staff at the New York State Food Laboratory revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could also occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.

Consumers who are sensitive to sulfites and have purchased “Lily Bulb” should discard the product. Questions may be directed to Mr. Trung S. Tran at (718) 417-9281.
