Each week, we normally see numerous recalls issued that involve mislabeling of product. In most cases, theses calls involve allergen risks. This past week was no exception. The scope of these recalls vary as well as the way in which the mislabeling issue was identified.
A Wisconsin firm is recalling hamburger patties after receiving complaints that hamburger patties with cheese, a dairy allergen, and bacon were mislabeled as plain patties.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2017 – Kenosha Beef International, LTD., a Kenosha, Wis. establishment, is recalling approximately 3,960 pounds of beef patty products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The products may contain milk, in the form of cheddar cheese, a known allergen that was not declared on the finished product label. The products also contain undeclared bacon.
The bacon cheddar beef patty products were produced on June 14, 2017. The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels]
4-lb retail carton containing 12, 1/3 pound burgers of “JP O'REILLY’S, PUB BURGER, FAMILY PACK, MADE FROM BEEF CHUCK,” with a sell-by date of 01-10-18.
24-lb cases of “JP O’REILLY’S, BACON & CHEDDAR BEEF PATTIES” with sell-by date of 01-10-18 and case codes of 0614KS42065, 0614KS42066, 0614KS42067, 0614KS42068 and 0614KS42070.
The products subject to recall have establishment number “EST. 425B” printed adjacent to the sell-by date on the retail carton and inside the USDA mark of inspection on the shipping case. These items were shipped to retail locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
The problem was discovered on Aug. 9, 2017 when the firm received two consumer complaints regarding the bacon cheddar beef patties not being labeled as bacon and cheddar. Specifically, the products were labeled as “JP O’Reilly’s PUB BURGER,” but contained “JP O’Reilly’s Bacon Cheddar Beef Patties.”
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Taylor Farms Retail, Inc. in Salinas is conducting a limited recall of 293 cases of Taylor Farms Creamy Homestyle Coleslaw Kits due to an undeclared milk allergen. Milk is an ingredient in the dressing packet included in the salad kit. This recall is limited to one production day from a single location which distributes to Raley’s in California and Savemart in California. The recall did not apply to any other Taylor Farms products.
Taylor Farms took this action proactively because people who are sensitive or have allergies to milk could be at risk of an adverse reaction if they consume this product. The undeclared allergen was discovered through a quality check. At this time no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of this product have been reported. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
The recalled Taylor Farms Creamy Homestyle Coleslaw Kits were produced on July 31, 2017 and have a “Best If Used By Date” of 08-16-17 with a lot code: TFRS212A07C on the front of the bag. No other code dates of this product or any other Taylor Farms products are involved in this recall.
