Breading Recall for Milk Allergens Due to Cross Contact in Processing

Newly Weds Foods issued a statement that their recall for breading, which caused a number of food processors to issue a recall, was due to cross contact in the manufacturing practice at their Massachusetts manufacturing facility.  The issue was discovered by one of their seafood customers. There were other meat and poultry recalls that resulted with more than 1.3 millions pounds of product.

Newly Weds Foods issues statement on breading-related recalls

By Lisa M. Keefe on 6/14/2017

Chicago-based Newly Weds Foods, identified by a seafood customer as the supplier of breading including an undeclared allergen (milk), confirmed that it is also the supplier behind nine meat- and poultry-related recalls in the last week totaling 1.3 million pounds of product distributed across the United States and in Canada.

In response to a request by Meatingplace, Newly Weds' Senior Director of Global Marketing Tom Downs emailed a statement:

Out of an abundance of caution, Newly Weds Foods, Inc. (“NWF”) voluntarily recalled specific lot codes of Cracker Meals and Blended Bread Coatings due to the potential presence of undeclared milk from cross-contact during the manufacturing process. Some specific non-dairy NWF Cracker Meal products made in the Watertown, Mass., facility were discovered to have a small amount of dairy present. The root cause has been identified and corrective actions have been implemented. To date, no consumer illnesses have been connected to NWF products. The company continues to cooperate fully with all regulatory authorities. The quality of all NWF products is of the utmost importance to the company.

Downs noted that, "At this time, it reflects all the information Newly Weds Foods is able to share."

In its official recall notifications, USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service did not identify the supplier.
