Walnut Pieces Recalled After Retail Sample Tests Positive or Salmonella

A Wisconsin company is recalling walnut pieces after  a sample of the product was found to be positive for Salmonella, discovered during FDA routine retail testing.

Walnut candies sold in 27 states including Pennsylvania were recalled Monday for possible salmonella contamination. Eillien's Candies Inc. said in a press release issued through the Food and Drug Administration that it is voluntarily recalling Walnut Pieces candy because some of the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Consumers who have recently purchased the items with the BEST BY DATES listed at stores located in AR, CO, FL, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MT, ND, NY, NE, OH, OK, PA, TN, TX, SD, UT, WA, WV, WI and WY should not consume this product and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Routine sampling conducted by the FDA showed the presence of salmonella in the candy.
