Listeria is an organism that can become a hazard in these foods if controls are not in place. These products are most likely cold filled, and thus have post-lethality exposure. That is, after the product is processed, it is filled into containers. Environmental contaminates like Listeria, if present through the absence of control, can get into containers during this time. Because Listeria can grow at refrigeration temperatures, it can grow in the humus essentially from the time the product is shipped until the time the product is consumed.
Here again, we find a private label company having a negative impact on a larger brand, including Trader Joe's. The processor in the case, Lansal Inc, (d.b.a. Hot Momma's Foods) had bought a hummus filler two years ago for their MA facility (according to the MassLive.com release below).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 19, 2014 - Prepared Foods manufacturer, Lansal, Inc.( d.b.a Hot Mama’s Foods), announced today that as a precaution it is voluntarily recalling approximately 14,860 pounds of hummus and dip products due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes, an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Lansal, Inc. is voluntarily recalling all products manufactured at the same facility and distributed to both wholesalers and retailers during the same time. These include the following products that are packaged in plastic containers:

The potential for contamination was found during a routine test of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus (10 ounce) by the Texas Department of Health. No illness has been reported.
Lansal, Inc. has contacted all impacted retail customers and distributors instructing them to remove all affected product from sale and is working with the appropriate agencies including state Departments of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and local authorities.

SPRINGFIELD – Hot Mama’s Foods is expanding its manufacturing in Springfield with the help of an equipment loan through MassDevelopment.
Hot Mama’s Foods, which has the formal business name of Lansal Inc., borrowed $260,280 to purchase a machine that packages hummus, a spread made from chickpeas, and hummus-like dips.
“It drops the cup, fills it and seals it,” said owner Matthew D. Morse owner. “It’s been up and running since June.”
Hot Mama’s Foods will have hired a dozen new employees in Springfield by the end of 2012 if it keeps to schedule, Morse said. the company has 65 employees in Springfield now and about 60 in a factory near Chicago.
Established in 1984, Hot Mama’s Foods makes fresh, natural, and select organic salsas, hummus, pesto, sauces, salads and dips for regional and national retailers. Morse said many of its products are “private label” brands sold under various store-brand names around the country.
“We have even been able to get our products in Canada and Mexico,” he said.
In 2006, MassDevelopment participated in a $1 million financing package with the Bank of Western Massachusetts – now People’s United Bank – to help Hot Mama’s Foods move to its Avocado Street location and expand in Springfield.
MassDevelopment is the state’s finance and development agency. During fiscal year 2011, MassDevelopment financed or managed more than 300 projects generating investment of $3.8 billion in the Massachusetts economy. These projects are expected to create more than 10,000 jobs, 2,547 of which will be permanent and 8,129 will be in construction. Those projects also include 1,000 new or rebuilt residential units.
